A family fun day based on the Mexican festival 'Day of the Dead' with culture, food, and entertainment. Bands, food stalls, arts and crafts, pinatas, face painters, chilli sauce contest and prizes for best Day of the Dead outfit.
The Day of the Dead originated as an indigenous Mexican celebration of life and departed loved ones. Traditionally people dress up in flamboyant 19th-century costumes wearing face paint resembling colourfully decorated skeletons, with flowers and love hearts.
On the 8th anniversary of the Nelson Day of the Dead, there will be performances, food stalls serving traditional Mexican food, ingredients, chills, local Day of the Dead Arts and Crafts, face painters, pinatas, and competitions for best Mexican Day of the Dead outfit.
Offerings are made on an 'altar', decorated with candles, marigolds, fruits, sweet bread, sugar skulls and photographs of loved ones that have passed, with their favourite drink, food and mementoes.
Visitors are invited to bring photographs or mementoes of their loved ones to add to the Altar and do not forget to pick them up when you leave.
