Ten years on what do we know? Are they still out of sight out of mind?

Hidden from view, at depths of 800 metres or more, live a range of diverse and colourful, deep-sea corals. Di Tracey is a deep-sea scientist at NIWA who has been researching deep-sea fish and corals in New Zealand waters for decades.

Knowledge of coral fauna has advanced substantially in the New Zealand and wider South Pacific region since the early days L'Astrolabe and Terra Nova voyages. Di will provide a summary on the last decade of data: their distribution, biology, the oceanographic and geological environment in which they are located, and the age of the corals in our region.

She will also discuss the relevance of the research to date, and how we support the development of initiatives and options for effective policy-setting and management of deep-sea corals.
