Friends of Te Papa

Join us for one of our last sessions of the year to celebrate and analyse the history of LGBTQI fashion representation in museums and galleries across the world. Expert Dr Shaun Cole is joining us from the UK to deliver this fascinating talk on the ever evolving world of queer style. We’ll enjoy a glass of bubbly together after work and explore this fabulous world of fashion which is coming into the spotlight ever more.

This talk will take as its starting point a lecture Shaun gave in 1995, in relation to the Victoria and Albert Museum’s ‘Streetstyle’ exhibition and its inclusion of a section on lesbian and gay style. There’ll be reflection on his attitudes towards inclusion of such materials in the V&A other museums at that time. We’ll then consider whether this has really changed in the past 24 years, particularly reflecting on the ‘A Queer History of Fashion’ exhibition at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 2013 – considering what it included and what it didn’t.

We’ll then discuss a number of other recent examples of exhibitions, including at Brighton Museum, Museum of London and Iowa State University Textiles & Clothing Museum to address ways in which LGBTQI fashion and style has been included and referenced, as well as how this reflects current concerns about LGBTQI representations in public museum and gallery spaces.

Dr Shaun Cole is a writer, lecturer and curator. He is Associate Professor in Fashion at Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton), where he is also Co-Director of the intersectionalities: politics, identities, cultures, research group. He was formerly Associate Dean at London College of Fashion and Curator at the V&A, London, where he curated exhibitions such as Graphic Responses to AIDS (1996), Dressing the Male (1999) and Black British Style (2004). He is Vice Chair of the Costume Society UK and Associate Editor of the journal Fashion, Style and Popular Culture.

He was a consultant on the exhibitions A Queer History of Fashion (FIT New York) and Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s (V&A, London). He has also written on the subject of menswear and gay fashion. His publications include ‘Don We Now Our Gay Apparel’: Gay Men’s Dress in the Twentieth Century (2000), Dialogue: Relationships in Graphic Design (2005) The Story of Men’s Underwear (2010) and Fashion Media: Past and Present (2013).

This event is presented in partnership with Te Papa and the ‘Millennial Masculinities: Queers, Pimp Daddies and Lumbersexuals‘ conference at Massey University 10 & 11 December.
