Northart Gallery

Northart re-opens for 2019 with an exciting programme of performances, music, workshops, a seminar and two exhibitions all celebrating Chinese New Year.

The New Zealand Beijing Opera Society kicks of the festivities on Sunday 3 February with a band performance at 4.30pm, followed by a Qipao (tea aroma spreading) performed by North Shore Chinese Association Model Team, a sword dance and Taiji fan dance by the North Shore Taiji and Martial Arts Society, and singing by the Rainbow Chorus, all in the square in front of the galleries.

The two exhibitions will officially open at 5pm, then run daily 10am to 4pm until 20 February. ‘Accept Each Word Spoken with Love’, curated Miao Xu, showcases the work of twelve young Asian artists, many recent graduates or current students at Auckland tertiary art schools. ‘Hometown’ by members of the New Zealand Institute of Fine Arts will include work by well-known Chinese artists Bangzhen Deng and Lu Bo.

Other related workshops and seminars during the exhibitions, all free entry thanks to funding from Creative Communities Auckland, will include:

Saturday 9 February, 3-4pm: Children’s handcraft workshop, making new year cards by recycling cardboard. Suitable for age 3+ accompanied by an adult.

Saturday 16 February, 2-3pm: Seminar on Chinese Art in Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) with ‘Hometown’ artists Lu Bo and Bangzhen Deng.

Saturday 16 February, 3-4pm: A workshop in traditional Chinese Painting, tutored by ‘Hometown’artist Jinshui Lin.

No bookings are required. Contact Miao Xu (mia.xu@northart.co.nz) for further details.
