Christmas is fast approaching and where would our Christmas preparations be without a serving of carols? Renaissance Singers will be celebrating Christmas with carols drawn from our heritage in England and Austria, America and Ireland all steeped in mid-winter, sprinkled with some distinctly New Zealand elements of Pohutakawa flowers and summer in the bay. We know carols are best sung heartily and you’ll want to sing along too – so this concert won’t be just about our singing, we’d love you to join in singing the favourites with us.
Christine has chosen an exciting mixture of old and new, of the familiar and the unexpected. The essential Away in Manger, The First Nowell and Silent Night are interspersed with favourites from David Willcocks with his signature rhythms and infectious tunes. Jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi is less well-known, but his carol Christmas Time is Here, which was written of Charlie Brown’s Christmas became an instant hit. Composers are often inspired to produce their own arrangements of traditional carols, and we will be singing arrangements by Linda Spevacek, Kirby Shaw, Paul Echols, and nearest to home John Hawley who was the Renaissance Singers’ conductor in the mid-1980s.
