About Calexico:
Taking their name from the border town of California and Mexico, Calexico has been mixing musical styles and cultural perspectives since the mid-90s, creating their very own brand of Tex-mex, Americana, indie rock with broad Latin influences.
Over the course of eight studio albums they’ve become cult heroes for their well-cultivated signature sound, outstanding live shows and collaborations with everyone from Arcade Fire to My Morning Jacket and Iron & Wine.
The origin of Calexico comes from the meeting of singer/guitarist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino. The latter was playing drums in a band called Giant Sand when he met Burns, who joined the band as a touring upright bassist.
The band relocated to Tucson, and Burns and Convertino departed to form the band Friends of Dean Martin, which lasted two years before splitting. Burns and Convertino continued working together as a rhythm section for hire but ultimately decided to start their own project, with Burns shifting from bass to lead vocals and guitar.
Their first album, “Spoke” was recorded in 1997 for a German indie label called Hausmusik, but once the band signed with Quarterstick Records it was re-released in the U.S. However, it wasn’t until 1998’s second album “The Black Light” that the band started courting national attention.
The album, a concept album about the desert connecting Arizona to North Mexico, received stellar reviews and their profile was raised even higher by touring with the likes of Pavement and The Dirty Three.
Calexico’s membership changed over the following years with various musicians joining Burns and Convertino as they pursued different projects. By 2008, their music had gained mainstream appeal and they had a strong international following, especially as a live act.
2015’s ambitious new album Edge of The Sun is the follow-up to 2012’s Algiers and was written and recorded during a sojourn in Mexico City. Edge of the Sun features a long list of guest contributors, including Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Nick Urata (DeVotchKa), Neko Case, Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses) and Grammy-winning Mexican singer Carla Morrison.
Calexico's last tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2013 included their triumphant Sydney Opera House headline concert, Brisbane Festival, Christchurch Arts Festival, Wave Rock Weekender, Melbourne’s Corner Hotel and other signature theatre and club dates.
