Three decades after its initial release, David Lynch’s Blue Velvet has lost none of its power to derange, terrify, and exhilarate.
Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan), a college-age amateur sleuth bedecked in New Wave–ish skinny ties and boxy blazers finds an ear in a field, determining to whom it was once attached is just one part of a gruesome mystery he tries to solve.
Part of the mystery involves one of cinemas greatest creations the nitrous-oxide-huffing sociopath Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper).
Blue Velvet is about how America is an idea, a surface, an indistinct image. It’s about the simple ways we can corrupt that image for personal gain. It’s perhaps Lynch’s most trenchant and political film, a film that says we’re all evil in some aspect or another, a surreal-creepy-funny privilege to view .
Witness the beauty in a rare 35mm print only at Hollywood Avondale.
