At the end of October 1918, a serviceman from the New Zealand Medical Corps camp in Awapuni, Palmerston North, traveled to Auckland for some rest and recreation.

He likely mingled, danced and drank to relax. All too soon his break was over and he returned to Palmerston North. Little did he know that he returned with a deadly passenger - a new enemy with a surprising target: young, healthy adults - influenza.
