Womad New Zealand

Take an antique magic lantern projector, add an engaging storyteller, an iPhone, a time-travelling adventure, stunning graphics, live music and let yourself go – somewhere, somewhen, somehow.

In this gloriously tongue-in-cheek show, Arthur Meek reimagines Samuel Butler’s satirical 1862 sci-fi novel Erewhon.

The New York-based Kiwi playwright has taught himself the lost art of magic lantern projections to transport us to a utopian land, somewhere in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. In this mysterious place, women have the upper hand, illness is punished, wealth is pitied, and technophobia is prized.

Made in collaboration with Edinburgh’s Magnetic North Theatre Company, Erewhon is delivered through Meek’s charismatic story-telling, with a live score by Fly My Pretty's Eva Prowse and lantern slides from Stuff cartoonist Sharon Murdoch and friends.

Fresh from a five-star run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this surprising one hour-show is described by audiences as imaginative, innovative and clever.
