All Ages

The Little Box of Operas presents a comic opera double bill performance at the newly refurbished Hanover Hall.

La Canterina by Joseph Haydn

Life can be a struggle for a young singer, but the soprano Gasparina (Beth Goulstone) and her stage mother Apollonia (Claire Barton) have hit on an ingenious scheme to extract financial support from Gasparina’s suitors – her singing teacher Don Pelagio (Harry Grigg) and the naïve but charming Don Ettore (Lois Johnston). All goes well until the two men discover themselves to be rivals; the ensuing confusion, Don Pelagio says, ‘reminds him of an opera.’ This short work, written for the name day of Prince Anton in 1766, shows Haydn at his most light-hearted, including a cross-dressing role and a parody aria – ‘in the style of Joseph Haydn.’

Bon Appétit! by Lee Hoiby

Have you ever wondered how to make the perfect chocolate cake – Le Gâteau au Chocolat l’Eminence Brune? In Lee Hoiby’s Bon Appetit! Julia Child (sung by Claire Barton) demonstrates the baking of this superb cake. Based on the scripts of Julia Child’s much loved cooking programme, this opera has the potential to get very messy, in spite of a ‘self-cleaning kitchen’ …

A magnificent introduction to this new Dunedin venue which you will enjoy and remember always.
